“Fountais of mohitos” / Evie Demetriou
“In one of her brilliant ironic essays, the feminist writer Rebecca Solnit (Author of Men Explain Things to Me and Whose Story is This?) deconstructs the myths of women having to get drunk in order to feel sexually less inhibited and more free; blaming their drunkenness as one of the main causes of unwanted pregnancies and by doing so putting all the responsibility on the women and none on the men. There are many categories of women, Solnit argues, that don’t fit this stereotype. “Not even with fountains of mojitos spouting up from the ground like geysers will they become pregnant, no matter what.” (Solnit, The Mother of all Questions, p. 168).
In Evie Demetriou’s new group choreography, she gathered around her four dancers, four women, four friends, four mothers who don’t need ‘fountains of mojitos’ to share their intimacies with each other: how they experience their sexuality, their pregnancies, their changing bodies and the wide range of emotions these evoke from shame to pleasure; from silent awkwardness to extravert explosions of laughter; from timid self-explorations over sensual or assertive encounters to joyful celebrations of togetherness.
Together they researched a physical language that allows the spectator to eavesdrop in on their intimate conversations and experience a similar emotional and energetic journey.”
